Even when I have almost zero free time, in the last months I've managed to finish a couple of portraits, just for the sake of practicing a little and not letting my drawing skills (whatever they may be) die. I still have tons of unfinished sketches waiting to be scanned, though.
The guy portrayed in the first illustration is artist R. M. Guèra. The woman portrayed in the second one should be singer-composer Tori Amos, but I'm not sure I managed to capture her naïve, fairy-like beauty.
Unlike many people my age, I wasn't a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon back in the late 80s and early 90s. However, having recently watched a lot of episodes of the 2012 reboot, Leonardo has become my favorite character. He's the Cyclops of the team (if you can get my X-Men reference) and he's also a Star Trek fan. Well, kind of.
I used pencil to draw this, then painted it with watercolor, then put a little bit of Photoshop on it. By enlarging the picture you'll see the watercolor texture better.

A lot of times I try a new drawing technique, but after layers and layers and layers, and even more layers yet, I end up with a result that looks very similar to previous illustrations.
This time I used a photo of internet pal (and awesome podcaster) Robin Harman to draw this mad guy here.
Also, I made an animated GIF (click to enlarge, as always) with some steps of the process. Enjoy.
I kept calling the deer Matt, as I used a photo of actor Matt Smith as reference.

I'm really enjoying Rick Remender's work on Captain America, so as soon I knew the Falcon was becoming the new Cap, I thought I could draw an illustration about that. I did it just for the fun of trying some different coloring techniques, although I always end up with kind of the same result.
I also made an animated gif (click to enlarge) showing five steps of the whole process. As you can see here, during the coloring/texturing step I made some changes to the original wings, which I didn't quite like.

There is a fun fact related to this illustration: three of the seven people who saw it before I posted it here, first misread the text as "Captain Africa", and asked me if I had done it on purpose. Which I didn't, by the way. Weird.
I'm gonna continue posting tributes to some characters or comics I like. This time it had to be Saga, the awesome sci-fi epic written by Brian K. Vaughan with art by Fiona Staples. I love this book so much.
This fake cover was made with a combination of pencil and Photoshop. I used photo-reference for the robot and his horse, although we'd better call it painting-reference. I love Velázquez' work, and have always wanted to do something inspired in this portrait of Count-Duke of Olivares, so here it is.
Oh, and yes, I was listening to Queen when drawing this.

In 2009 Mariano de la Torre published "Renegades: En los Albores de la Tempestad", a space-opera comic that he created, wrote and illustrated himself. Since I read it, I've been wanting to try drawing some of the characters in the book.
Last night I couldn't sleep, so I decided to embrace insomnia, go to Photoshop and make this illustration of Agnam, a cat-person priest. I guess it was the obvious choice, given my love for anthropomorphic felines.
I know Mariano has had the intention to reprise his Renegades characters since the first volume came out. I hope we can soon enjoy another story in this universe.
Those are some characters I designed for a very old, never released comic project. I drew them back in 2000, and just found them in a drawer some days ago and thought about scanning and coloring them in Photoshop.
Last month I was hired to do some concept art illustrations for a horror film that a friend of mine is pre-producing. Unfortunately, I had to give up the job due to schedule problems.
This melancholic girl here is one of the very few drawings that got actually finished. It was rejected by the director, by the way, as the character in the script was meant to look younger.Israel L. These days I've been sketching some ideas for a Doctor Who illustration, but that's the only one I had time to finish. It shows the TARDIS parked in Plaça Reial, a famous place in Barcelona.
The technique I used was ballpoint pen, then watercolors, then Photoshop.

Aaaand another portrait. In this case the original inspiration came from actor Peter Capaldi, who was recently chosed as the 12th actor to play the role of Doctor Who.
This illustration was actually an excuse to experiment with a technique that (as long as I can recall) I hadn't used before. I drew the basic lines on my computer, then printed it and colored it with watercolor, then scanned it and finished it with some Photoshop. I had a lot of fun with the process, so I guess I'll be trying it again soon.

I took me 9 months to update this blog, basically because I haven't had
time to draw. Some weeks ago, though, I got one of those stylus for the
tablet and started practicing some sketching in my iPad. These two drawings here are an example of what I have been trying.

The two of them were done from start to finis with my iPad, using Adobe Ideas.

Hope this summer I'll have some free time to continue messing with the stylus.

It's been three years since I made this self-portrait, so I decide to try another one. I actually began drawing when I still had long hair, which I cut away some weeks ago.Israel L. Escuderohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11324994966758803543noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1877639289890940133.post-56339512535252460742012-06-16T05:10:00.000-07:002012-06-16T10:06:41.515-07:00SCALPED TWO
Last weeks I've been doing some boring work in front of the computer, waiting to capture, convert or compress video files before editing them. Sometimes, when I have to waste my time with that kind of stuff, I use it to work on some of the dozen of unfinished illustrations I have in my "to do" folder.
I chose two SCALPED characters this time: Dashiell Bad Horse and Lincoln Red Crow. The two main characters of the book.

I enjoy drawing Dashiell, not only because he's a very charismatic character, but also because you can easily imagine him carrying a gun, and as someone who was a teen when Image Comics and the first Tarantino movies came out, I have so much fun drawing guys with guns.
But if there's a character in SCALPED that beats Dashiell, that has to be Lincoln Red Crow. I have wanted to try another Red Crow close-up (with a different approach and a different technique) since I made this one about two years ago. It is difficult to render the many marks the past has left on his face the way Guéra does, but I like to try.

This summer the 60th and final issue of SCALPED will be out, setting the end of one of the best collections in the history of American comics. Let these illustrations serve as my very humble tribute to the great job Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra have been doing for the last five years.

These days I've been recovering old drawings from forgotten folders I had at home. This one here, for instace, is a recently remade version of a tiger robot I drew back in 1993, when I was still a student at Joso Comics School. I added the background, but the tiger looks pretty much the same as it did 18 years ago.
I designed this robot as part of a sience-fiction universe I've been building since I was a kid. Last month Image Comics started publishing SAGA, written by Brian K. Vaughan and wonderfully penciled, inked and colored by Fiona Staples.
The guy in this illustration (which I made during a sleepless night) is The Will, a space hitman that, having read only issue 1, I'd define as a sociopath version of Han Solo. I'm sure Vaughan will reveal more about him and his personality in upcoming issues, though.
I finally had some free time to finish this version of Gustave Courbet's amazing self-portrait, also titled The Desperate Man. I love the look in the eyes of the man and the serious, languid expression of his face. Also, the fact that for some time it was thought that the nobleman portrayed there was Don Quixote's author Miguel de Cervantes.
[The Knight With A Hand On His Chest is an original painting by Doménicos Theotokópoulos 'El Greco']Israel L. I made several LOBO pin-ups and illustrations then, but they must be now growing dust in a dark, lost drawer somewhere between my apartment and my parents' house.
This pin-up here is, as you may have realized, a tribute to one of the most famous promotional pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger's CONAN.
[Lobo created by Keith Giffen and Roger Slifer]Israel L.
